UTICA TOPS NEWARK IN 8-7 SHOOTOUT

UTICA, NY. (June 10, 2019) –The Blue Sox remain undefeated at home and stayed atop of the West Division, following an 8-7 victory over the Newark Pilots.

Utica gave up 10 hits and recorded two errors.  There were times where the team was down by one run, but the Blue Sox kept it together and rallied back in the bottom of the seventh to notch their fifth straight win and seventh win of the season (7-1).

The game was scoreless in the first inning, but in the top of the second Pilots’ right fielder Parker Denny hit the ball all the way out of the park for the leadoff homerun. This gave Newark an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Gabe Sherman (College of Wooster) walked to first, stole second, advanced to third off of a wild pitch, and scored off of another wild pitch to tie the game at one.  In the same inning, Tyler Simon (Kennesaw State) walked, advanced to second off of the wild pitch, and reached home plate thanks to a single from Luis Deleon (Central Alabama CC, North Carolina Central). This put Utica up 2-1 at the end of three.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Sherman hit a single, and then Simon reached first off of an error from the Pilots’ third baseman Bayley Jamanis.   Sherman moved up to second off of the error.  Blue Sox third baseman Ryan Enos (SUNY Oswego) later singled to bring Sherman home (UTI 3-1), and then Simon reached third off of an Enos single and crossed home off of another Pilots’ error from the second baseman James Wrabel (UTI 4-1).

Deleon reached base on an error from Newark’s starting pitcher Ron Loomis. The error also brought Enos home and gave Utica a 5-1 advantage. Vincenzo Castronovo (Bryant University) recorded a single, which brought Deleon home for the Blue Sox’s sixth run of the game.

Utica was up 6-1 at the end of four, but the Pilots erased their five-run deficit and retook the lead in the top of the seventh. It all began in the top of the sixth, when Allen Murphy and Denny both singled.  Over Torres walked to load the bases, and Shaun Hillis later singled to bring Murphy and Denny home and make the score 6-3.  The Pilots’ pinch hitter Dylan Duplechain also singled to bring Torres and Hillis home.

Newark was only down by one run heading out of the sixth (6-5), and more luck came to them in the top seventh. Pilots’ shortstop David Bermudez advanced to first off of an error from Enos. Murphy also advanced to first after being hit by a pitch (Bermudez up to second off the walk). The Pilots tied the game 6-6 when Bermudez reached home plate off of another error from Enos. Then Torres singled to bring Murphy home and put the Pilots back on top 7-6.

But no matter what the outcome is during in the game, the Blue Sox always found a way to bounce back and take the lead.  Utica tied the game again at seven in the bottom seventh when Brenton Phillips (Andrew College, University of Akron) advanced to first off of an error from Duplechain, and later scored off of a double from LJ Bryant (Andrew College, Florida A&M).

Utica got back out front in the bottom eighth when Enos walked and ran all the way home off of Deleon’s single and an error from Denny.

The Blue Sox held onto their 8-7 lead in the top ninth and got the win. Blue Sox pitcher Ray Pacella was the one player to thank for the victory, as he gave up no runs and one hit in his two innings of work on the mound. Pacella was credited with the win while Loomis got the loss, striking out four, walking five and giving up eight hits and runs in his eight innings of play. Deleon and Sherman both led the way in hitting for the Blue Sox, as they each recorded two hits.

Utica will be back home tomorrow to face off against the Albany Dutchmen. Game time is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
