SOX ADVANCE TO 2-0
O’Boyle, Pacella Lead Blue Sox to 4-3 Over Adirondack in Home Opener
UTICA, NY. (June 1, 2019) – The Utica Blue Sox were back at historic Murnane Field earlier tonight for their home opener against the Adirondack Trail Blazers. Utica had some high and low points throughout the game, but the team held on and beat Adirondack 4-3 to improve to 2-0 on the year.
In the top of the first, Adirondack third baseman Andy Hague advanced to first off of the error by Blue Sox’ starting pitcher Dalton O’Boyle. Daniel Irisarri and Chris Rotondo both walked to load the bases and Hague reached home plate off of a sacrifice ground out by Kevin Ferrer to give Adirondack a 1-0 lead.
But Utica retook the lead in the bottom first. Blue Sox’s shortstop Tyler Simon singled and advanced to second off a wild pitch. Robbie Young then hit the ball all the way out of the park to already record the Blue Sox’s first homerun in their second game of the season. He and Simon scored to give the Blue Sox the lead, 2-1.
Utica added another run in the bottom of the second, when Utica native Vincenzo Castronovo singled, advanced to second off a Dewey Roden single, and later scored off of an error from the Trail Blazers’ first baseman Peter Cosentino to put Utica up by two (3-1).
The Blue Sox put up another run in the bottom of the fifth. Luis Deleon advanced to first off of an error by Hague, moved up to second off of a wild pitch, and scored off of another Trailblazers’ error by the shortstop Randy Flores.
Utica had a commanding 4-1 lead at the end of five, but the Trailblazers showed some life in the top of the seventh. Rotondo walked to first and advanced to third on a Kevin Ferrer’s double. Rotondo then scored off of Will Jennings sacrifice ground out, and Ferrer also reached home off of an error from Deleon.
Adirondack was down by one run (4-3) heading out of the inning, but thanks to the help of Utica pitcher Ray Pacella, who struck out three and gave up no hits or walks in his two innings on the bump, the Blue Sox held onto their one-run lead to secure their second straight victory.
O’Boyle got the win, recording eight strikeouts, walking three, and giving up one hit in six innings of play, and Pacella got the save. Adirondack’s starting pitcher Ryan Solimine got the loss striking out four, walking one, and giving up eight hits in seven innings of play.
Young and Deleon led the way in hitting, as they each recorded two hits.
Utica will travel to Watertown Sunday to square off against the Rapids. They will then return home next Tuesday to play the Diamond Dawgs.
