Enos, Deleon Lead Blue Sox to 8-2 Win Over Mohawk Valley
UTICA, NY. (June 3, 2019) – Rain poured at Murnane Field all throughout the night, but the Utica and Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs still played ball.
The Blue Sox played well in the wet conditions, as the home team beat Mohawk Valley 8-2. The Blue Sox recorded 14 hits, and every player on the starting lineup recorded at least one base hit.
The Diamond Dawgs took a 1-0 lead in the top first when centerfielder Owen Wosleger hit an infield single and later scored off of an error from Utica third baseman Ryan Enos.
But the Blue Sox bounced back in the bottom of the second. Matt Parkinson (Herkimer College, College of Charleston) walked and advanced to third off of Dewey Roden’s (UMass Lowel) double. He later scored off of Tim Mara’s (Eckerd College) sacrifice fly out to tie the game up at one. Blue Sox center fielder Vincenzo Castronovo (Bryant University) singled to bring Roden home and give Utica its first lead of the game, 2-1.
The Blue Sox added an insurance run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Roden doubled and then advanced to third off of Mira’s single. Utica third baseman Ryan Enos (SUNY Oswego) singled to bring Roden home and give the Blue Sox a 3-1 lead.
Utica ran away from this one in the bottom of the fifth. Mira walked and later reached home off of Enos’ double to give the Blue Sox a 4-1 lead. Tyler Simon (Kennesaw State) singled to bring Enos home, and then Luis Deleon (Central Alabama CC, North Carolina Central) hit a homerun to bring him and Simon home and give the Blue Sox a 7-1 lead.
Mohawk Valley scored a run in the top of the sixth, but Utica also tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth. Brenton Phillips walked, advanced to second after Roden’s walk, and scored by virtue of a single from Enos.
Utica kept it together in the top ninth and beat the Diamond Dawgs to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Enos had a great day at the plate going 4-for-5 with three singles, one double and three RBIs.
Blue Sox’ pitcher Michael McCully (Siena College) got the win, striking out four in 2 2/3 innings work. Mohawk Valley’s starting pitcher Sal Fusco got the loss striking out five, walking four and giving up six hits in three innings.
Utica will be back home tomorrow to play the Watertown Rapids. Game time is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
