UTICA, N.Y. – The Utica Blue Sox announced Saturday the signing of Edwin Tavarez , a Redshirt Junior from Felician University where he is studying business administration. Fernandez is a first baseman from Garfield, N.J. where he attended Garfield High School, only a short drive from where he now goes to college.
Since joining Felician, Tavarez has been a huge help to the program. After two seasons with the club he has posted a .298 BA as well as a .371 OBP. Last season Tavarez was also named to the CACC second all conference team. Coming into this year he has been named to the NCBWA All East Region Preseason team.
Tavarez picked up the sport a little later than most of his competitors, beginning playing competitively around 12. Tavarez said that at a young age he tried to play a bunch of sports and really loved football. But when he began playing baseball his dad and himself began to worry about injuries so he transitioned over to just focusing on baseball.
Tavarez plans on returning to school to pick up a double major and play another year of college ball with his fifth year of eligibility. After that he hopes to keep playing in the future.
Tavarez’s decision to come to Utica came when his coach recommended the Blue Sox organization to him. Tavarez said that after looking into the team he really likes the environment in Utica as well as how professionally the team is run.
